BOOK TALK - Book Review 59

On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society, 1996.

“Enjoy the Killing,” is a troubling video of Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, author of “On Killing: The Psychological Cost Learning to Kill in War and Society,” and was recorded saying back in 2015.

Given that even in his military career, Grossman never saw one day of combat, he was merely a man who studied the concepts, dynamics and patterns involved in killing but had no personal experience with killing, and later became enamored of some of the more negative aspects of police culture, he should not be taken seriously, now.

In his later life, after the huge financial success of Grossman’s 1996 book, On Killing, he began teaching seminars on lethal force, for numerous law enforcement agencies nation wide. Grossman did this despite having no combat experience and no experience on the street as a police officer.

In a very real sense, Grossman lost his mind, his sense of the reality, and morality of homicidal violence. This does not detract from the importance of the book, though. It is still an important book that helps people understand the ways killing our fellow man and woman changes people and generally not for the better.
