THIS IS WHAT PROBLEM SOLVING LOOKS LIKE

Dear Neighbor,

We don't need another leader who just describes a problem, wrings their hands, but lacks a real-world solution. We can't wait years for someone to figure out the issues and levers to change big bureaucracies. And we should not settle for more of the same.

When I see problems, I set out to fix them.

What are some of the first ones I would tackle at Multnomah County? I would dig into the County’s budget to redirect funds to these public safety priorities:

  • Reopen County drug sobering center, implement the fixes to Measure 110 and provide more drug, and mental illness services.

  • Open more County jail beds, hire more DAs, and public defenders to stop violence and crime.

WE CAN’T AFFORD TO WAIT YEARS FOR SOMEONE ELSE

TO LEARN HOW TO MAKE OUR NEIGHBORHOODS SAFER

One of the most sacred duties of government is keeping the peace and people safe.

As a leader, I take a hands-on approach to creating safer, more livable communities.

Here is a real-world example of what you can expect of me:

The Oregonian on July 17, 2022, called:

Portland’s deadliest block

“… Milton off 82nd Avenue…has become a microcosm of Portland’s ongoing battle with record gun violence, homelessness, drug dealing and addiction and sex trafficking.”

Here’s what we did about it: My team and I, the Community Safety Division, and other city workers used a new approach:

  • We fast-tracked an integrated, immediate response that focuses resources and attention to this area.

  • We bypassed any not-very-effective bureaucracy that has frustrated residents and city officials alike.

How did we do?

The Oregonian came back six months later and, on January 1, 2023, and reported:

“Six months later, the area is almost unrecognizable”

“The 8200 block of Northeast Milton, which The Oregonian/OregonLive had dubbed the deadliest in Portland shortly before Adams’ visit, is now quiet.”  Read more: https://bit.ly/perfect-storm-then-not

PLEASE DONATE TO SAM: THE CHANGE MAKER

WE HAVE NO MORE TIME TO WASTE

To keep the peace and people safe, I would bring my hands-on approach to the County, cutting through bureaucracy, bringing together staff, partners, and neighbors, and acting quickly to deliver real results.

I would be honored to have your support. Call or text me with any comments or questions: 503-421-8925.

I provide commentary on local Portland politics, the dubious Portland Art, the snobs of the Portland "Literary" scene, and the good folks of the Portland poetry scene. I also write creative nonfiction, historical profiles, along with Gonzo journalism.
