Dear Neighbor,
This helps explain why Multnomah County is one of the most broken local governments in Oregon. Let’s fix it!
PLEASE DONATE HERE TO SAM'S COUNTY REFORM CAMPAIGN
I recently pointed out a core undemocratic problem that blocks the focus, urgency, and accountability of our Multnomah County government — I would move to abolish it if elected:
“Multnomah County’s elected chair has the power to unilaterally decide what proposals come before the county commission – and which do not.”
Published Saturday, this is what an investigation by The Oregonian found:
Multnomah County chair has unparalleled power to block proposals she doesn’t like
WE HAVE NO MORE TIME TO WASTE—PLEASE DONATE HERE
Seemingly to evade public oversight, this rule allows the county’s executive branch to ignore and gaslight voters and the public:
The Chair can reject or infinitely delay agenda items—such as the county’s “dangerously slow ambulance response,” according to The Oregonian.
It’s also maybe why the county, awash with money, has refused to support excess funds to help build affordable housing for people who are homeless.
SAM WOULD HIT THE GROUND RUNNING: CHIP IN HERE
Here is what I told The Oregonian:
“‘That a county chair can corrupt a board-approved rule, meant to ensure transparency and accountability, to achieve the exact opposite, typifies the rot at the top of Multnomah County’s undemocratic decision-making,’ said Sam Adams…”
We don't have any more time to waste. I would hit the ground running.
