Per the Oregonian, "Schmidt earlier Sunday decried the deadly violence. He took office on Aug. 1 and quickly announced that he wouldn’t pursue low-level charges against demonstrators, such as interfering with police or resisting arrest. He wasn’t district attorney when the office handled Reinoehl’s gun case." I couldn't find any record of dropped charges in the other case, other than after the murder. Further, after using false facts to justify claiming Schmidt doesn't understand restorative justice, you don't actually describe what "real" RJ would be. Isn't this what you have a degree in? Why don't you tell me what it is or what it looks like? You already had a citable point of resignations over leadership, so it's unclear why you got so sloppy with the rest of it.
Mary Sue: I have a Bachelor of Science degree, from PSU in Criminology and Criminal Justice, from the 2009 program/schedule. I was a double major, double minor and then completed a masters degree in 2013. So, no, I have never stated at any time that I have a degree in RJ, you incorrectly presumed that, why I don't know, but that is not correct, though I have taken several graduate level classes on RJ as a grad student.
If you click on all the links, embedded in the commentary of this recent commentary I've written, you'll find support for what I'm claiming. Anyone can do their own research as to what RJ actually is, and that is what I encourage, as I'm very dedicated to promoting education and encouraging people to educate themselves, rather than rely on others to inform them. So, it's not really up to me to explain the basics of RJ in a commentary about the blatant and tragic failings of DA Schmidt and whether or not Sam Adams is helping Ted Wheeler lead...
However, since you're interested, I'll take some time out of my busy day...
Simply allowing violent male offenders to go free after committing felony violent crimes is not an example of RJ, but rather a dangerous form of male identified Patriarchy that promotes men's freedom at the expense of others safety, primarily women and children's safety.
RJ concepts and best practices are more like... family group conferences, mediation and conflict resolution, community boards, building circles, impromptu conferencing sessions between victims and offenders, peace circles, victim impact panels and statements, victim/offender mediation in small and large groups, circle sentencing, community reparative boards, and victims services among others. These practices promote the 5 R's of Restorative Justice, which are--relationship, respect, responsibility, repair, and reintegration.
Some other principles of restorative justice are... 1.) Crime is a violation of people and relationships, 2.) Victims and the community are central to the justice process, 3.) A primary focus of a justice process is to assist victims and address needs, 4.) Restoring the community to the degree possible by using these methods...
These are the true forms of Restorative Justice that help so many people, but this is not what Schmidt values. He values MEN, at the expense of women. He values freeing male offenders, and leaving female victims to fend for themselves, both young and old, which includes adult women and minor girls. His deplorable history as the failed leader that he is, illustrates this only too well. If he valued women in any way, why would ten women leave the DA's office? That radical shift never happened in Micheal Schrunk's time, or in Rod Underhill's time as DA, either.
So, Schmidt has made history in Portland in this regard, and it will follow him wherever he goes. He will never be able to get away from this grim and revealing reality that he made those women feel that unsafe, unheard and powerless.
Hope this helps you to understand what RJ actually is, and that DA Schmidt has not been doing any of these things, rather he's only been releasing mostly male criminals out into the Portland community so they can continue to prey on others and hurt other people.
I again suggest you click on all the links and read those, and then click on the links in those articles, (some I've written and others are by other people and organizations) and then perhaps it will make more sense. It will require a lot of study, reading and commitment but I'm sure you can do it if you actually want to learn.
As to Micheal Forest Reinoehl, I have heard from multiple sources that Schmidt did release him in the 17 days from the time Schmidt took office and deadbeat Dad Reinoehl murdered Aaron Danielson in cold blood for various offences that in the past would have taken Reinoehl off Portland's streets.
"Schmidt’s hands-off approach to criminal justice also cost a man his life, Aaron “Jay” Danielson, who was shot to death by an Antifa member, Michael Reinoehl. Schmidt’s so-called “restorative justice” policy allowed Reinoehl to have charges from a July riot, possession of a loaded gun in a public place, resisting arrest and interfering with police” dropped by Schmidt’s office. Not long afterward, Reinoehl appeared to have purposefully targeted Danielson, a supporter of President Trump, shooting twice at him with the second bullet hitting Danielson in the back, killing him. The investigation showed that Reinoehl “conceals himself, waits, and watches” as Danielson walked by the garage. He then fatally shot the victim."
I use sources from both liberal and conservative news sources, because there is truth and facts to be gleaned from both, and as I'm not a radical of either political party but consider myself to be a Moderate Democrat, I see the value in not being a radical or an extremist.

Here is a good link on the basics of RJ. https://law.wisc.edu/fjr/rjp/justice.html
